England along with Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
