European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
