Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
