Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Premier Place.

At first glance, this work may look closer to a challenging academic examination than the latest popular music record from an artist whose last single featured a global pop star. Divided across four distinct movements and performed in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning classical-tinged work that delves into feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily change, often by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure ambition alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars seem rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, and full credit going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, its scale are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act more pronounced. What really raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to be right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish force. The track then shifts into the frenetic single driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to know—where it will go next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally different place than how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

A key balancing act of the album is navigating the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spirals skyward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a sharp edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried treasure that requires patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
