The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
