Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
